Port Douglas is an ideal place to base yourself to go exploring fantastic local destinations like the Atherton tableland, The Daintree rainforest or to drive the famous Bloomfield track from Cape tribulation to Cooktown through some of the most beautiful and pristine regions left on the planet. You will see magnificent forests, crystal clear streams, waterfalls, and if you are lucky, a glimpse of a Cassowary or rock wallaby.

In the town area around Port Douglas are lots of new apartment-style resorts that range in quality from three-star to five stars. Most are within walking distance of the beach, the marina, or Macrossan Street which contains the principal shopping precinct. The kids will love all the organized tours that you can go on as part of a family day out.

The Great Barrier Reef lies just offshore so diving excursions are on the menu as is a fishing charter to chase either big game fish like marlin or reef fish for the table like Red Emporer or Coral trout. The kids will talk about this sort of family outing for the rest of their lives. I took mine out on a family fishing trip here 20 years ago and they still talk about it today.

Port Douglas is a popular destination for divers whether they are experienced or not. This is a great place to take the family for an introductory dive, do a dive course, or if certified see some of the iconic dive destinations on the reef like the Cod Hole, Lizard Island, and the Ribbon Reefs.
